Pay Rate:  $85,000 / year           

Reports to:  Deputy Director of Operations             

Brooklyn Bridge Park (BBP) is looking to hire an experienced Operations Manager to oversee the custodial field operation of all 85 acres of the park. This individual should have experience in managing multiple staff members and a high level of understanding of custodial work, work management systems, and inventory management.  

The selected individual will work collaboratively with the deputy director and staff experienced in public space management, custodial maintenance, facility maintenance, and more.  Reporting to the Deputy Director of Operations, the Operations Manager will be responsible for directing a diverse staff charged with the highest standards of custodial maintenance. The standard schedule for the position is Thursday – Monday, 1pm – 9pm. Additional work hours may be required for weather-related or other business support reasons. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

Park Management  

  • Serve as a leader in the custodial operation by inspecting all playgrounds, restrooms, and green space, and implement cleaning schedules and procedures. 

  • Oversee comprehensive cleaning projects that involve pressure washing & restroom deep cleanings. 

  • Work with the Deputy Director of Operations on the development and implementation of a parkwide inspection program for all areas of the park to be completed on a routine basis utilizing BBP’s operations asset management systems.   

  • Weekly Organization of the Maintenance & Operation yards.  

  • Work with NYC Parks Enforcement Patrol on day-to-day matters relating to the rules and regulations of the park, safety and security concerns, area closures, and other issues. 

  • Collaborate with the Maintenance and Horticulture heads on snow and ice removal throughout the park, as well as other seasonal tasks. 

  • Assist with operational needs for all public events and film shoots. 

  • Support staff with cell phone troubleshooting, ensuring staff are proficient in using phones and other IT technology as needed.  

  • Monitor and report on parkwide signage. Collaborate with Maintenance and Communications on signage replacement and repair as needed. 

  • Manage the inventory of equipment and consumable supplies used by the Operations team. 

  • Serve in an after-hours, on-call capacity. 

People Management  

  • Coordinate with the Deputy Director of Operations on conducting staff reviews. 

  • Meet regularly with supervisors and custodians to provide guidance and leadership, while establishing expectations and building a strong team dynamic. 

  • Develop and implement a framework that provides for a positive visitor experience, including staff interactions with the public and conflict mitigation. 

  • Explore and implement new training and certifications for staff based on required City and State building codes, as well as general staff development training. 

  • In partnership with the Director of Operations, Deputy Director of People & Culture, and Safety Committee, track and update employee certifications and training programs through BBP’s operations asset management system. 

  • Participate in the staff hiring, onboarding, and offboarding process. 

  • Utilize our work management system to schedule larger tasks for staff and supervisors. 

  • Perform other duties as required. 

Qualifications: 

  • 5 Years of supervisory experience with a large staff; 

  • 2 Years experience in park & recreation settings preferred;   

  • Valid driver’s license;  

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; 

  • Experience using work management systems; 

  • Strong background in custodial field; 

  • Detail-oriented, hardworking, and self-motivated; 

  • Comfortable working independently or with a team in a park-setting; 

  • High School diploma or equivalent preferred. 

Additional Information: 

This job operates in a professional office environment and outdoors. Must be able to lift 50lbs and be comfortable working outdoors in all seasons.
